CSNL Defends Monrovia Mayor Siafa, Dismisses Corruption Allegations as Politically Motivated Smear Campaign

Monrovia, Liberia: The Civil Society Network of Liberia (CSNL) a leading pro democracy instutution, has rallied behind the Mayor of Monrovia, John Charuk Siafa, following a series of corruption allegations that have surfaced in the media.

Recent reports accuse the Mayor’s administration at the Monrovia City Corporation—MCC—of administrative misconduct, including unauthorized payments, procurement irregularities, audit interference, conflict of interest, and politically driven staffing.

But in a press release issued Tuesday, the Civil Society Network described the claims as fabricated and politically motivated. CSNL says its independent investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing, calling the allegations a "bunch of manufactured information" aimed at discrediting the Mayor’s achievements.

According to the Network, Mayor Siafa has implemented a more transparent and accountable financial system at the MCC. 

They say his administration has also made major strides in improving Monrovia’s waste management.

CSNL pointed to improvements under the Cheesemanburg Landfill Urban Sanitation project—also known as CLUS—highlighting its success in expanding waste collection and disposal services across Monrovia and surrounding communities.

The group also claims that many of the recent accusations are part of a smear campaign led by disgruntled, suspended staff members—particularly those affected by Mayor Siafa’s crackdown on financial corruption at the City Corporation. 

The crackdown allegedly exposed a network involved in fake deposits, impersonation, extortion, and payroll fraud.

CSNL further assured the public that all financial transactions at the MCC, including payroll processes, are being carried out in accordance with Liberia’s Public Financial Management laws and the guidelines of the Public Procurement and Concession Commission.
