‘’Drugs and Substance abuse is Now a Public Health Emergency” Pres. Boakai Declares

Capitol Hill: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has taken a bold step in addressing the drug epidemic in Liberia by declaring Drugs and Substance abuse as a Public Health Emergency. In his first state of the nation's address on Monday, President Boakai emphasized the urgent need to tackle this issue, which he referred to as an existential threat to the future of the country and its children.

The President specifically highlighted the use of "KUSH" as a major concern, stating that it is eating away at the fabric of society. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, President Boakai called for unity in combating this national security risk.

To ensure swift and effective action, President Boakai announced the establishment of a multi sectorial steering committee. This committee will be chaired by the Ministry of Health, with the Ministry of Justice serving as the co-chair. Other key agencies involved include the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).

In a show of leadership and commitment, President Boakai and his Vice President have pledged to be the first to undergo a drug test. They are urging all other government officials and citizens to follow suit, demonstrating their dedication to the cause.

The declaration of Drugs and Substance abuse as a Public Health Emergency signifies President Boakai's determination to address this crisis head-on. By mobilizing various government agencies and calling for collective action, he aims to protect the well-being of Liberian citizens and safeguard the future of the nation.

Drug abuse has been a long-standing problem in Liberia, with the use of marijuana and other illicit substances prevalent among young people. The consequences of drug abuse are far-reaching, with adverse effects on physical and mental health, social and economic well-being, and national security.

President Boakai's declaration of a Public Health Emergency is a significant step towards addressing this issue. It sends a strong message that drug abuse is not only a criminal issue but also a public health concern that requires urgent attention.

The multi sectorial steering committee established by the President will play a crucial role in coordinating efforts to combat drug abuse. The committee will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive national drug control strategy, including prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation programs.

The involvement of various government agencies in the committee is a testament to the cross-cutting nature of the drug abuse problem. It requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses the root causes of drug abuse, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education, among others.

The commitment of President Boakai and his Vice President to undergo a drug test is a commendable gesture that sets an example for other government officials and citizens. It demonstrates their willingness to lead by example and take responsibility for their actions.

The involvement of the LDEA in the steering committee is also critical in ensuring effective law enforcement and interdiction measures. The agency has been at the forefront of the fight against drug abuse in Liberia, and its expertise and experience will be invaluable in the committee's work.

The declaration of a Public Health Emergency also opens up opportunities for international support and collaboration. Liberia can benefit from the expertise and resources of international organizations such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in addressing the drug abuse problem.

It sends a strong message that drug abuse is a national security risk that requires urgent attention. The establishment of a multi sectoral steering committee and the commitment of government officials to undergo a drug test demonstrate the government's determination to combat drug abuse. Liberia can now look forward to a comprehensive national drug control strategy that addresses the root causes of drug abuse and safeguards the well-being of its citizens.
