Gov’t Allegedly Plans to Shut Down Key Radio stations Before July Protest

Monrovia, Liberia: Alvin Wesseh, Vice Chair for Administration of the CDC Youth League and an executive member of a newly formed civil society group involved in organizing upcoming protests, has made a serious allegation against the government.
According to Wesseh, credible sources within the government have revealed plans to shut down several major radio stations including Kings FM, Freedom FM, Voice of Liberia, OK FM, and Spoon Network before July 17, the date set by civil society organizations for a nationwide protest.
“These plans, if true, represent a grave threat to press freedom and democratic engagement,” Wesseh warned in a statement released earlier today.
The alleged move comes amid growing public dissent and mounting calls for accountability and reform from various civic groups.
The government has not yet issued a response to the allegation.
