Liberian Students in India Face Growing Danger, Urge Government to Act Now

Chandigarh, India: The Association of Liberian Students in India (ALSI) is urgently asking the Government of Liberia to step in as tensions grow between India and Pakistan. The conflict is putting thousands of Liberian students in danger, especially in northern and western parts of India.
There are over 4,000 Liberians in India, mostly students. Many live in high-risk areas like Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Kapurthala. These regions are now on high alert due to the conflict.
ALSI says there is no Liberian consulate or embassy in India to help them. On October 2, 2024, the group sent a report to the Liberian government asking for help. They also met with Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung in August 2024. But so far, no action has been taken.
ALSI is asking the government to:
• Intervene diplomatically;
• Send emergency consular support;
• Create a plan to evacuate students if needed;
• Set up a Liberian consulate or official representative in India.
The student group says it will keep trying to support its members but needs the government to do its part to protect Liberians abroad.
They are also calling on other organizations and human rights groups to help ensure the safety of Liberians living in India.
