Liberia National Police Enforces Restrictions on Motorcyclists for Public Safety
The Liberia National Police (LNP) is resolutely implementing measures to restrict motorcyclists from main streets in Monrovia and its surroundings, prioritizing public safety. Despite resistance from some motorcyclists, the Deputy Police Chief for Operations reaffirms the enforcement of the law.
Attorney Nelson Freeman, speaking at a news conference at LNP Headquarters, warns motorcyclists against resistance and emphasizes the police's commitment to upholding the restriction. The recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the LNP and the Motorcycle and Tricycle Union empowers the police to enforce the restriction effectively, starting May 15, 2024.
The decision to restrict motorcyclists aims to reduce accidents, crimes, and fatalities, with motorcycles frequently used in theft and armed robberies. Restricted areas include major roads in Monrovia, while tricycles have designated routes with specific limitations.
President of the Federation of Motorcycle and Tricycle Unions of Liberia, John A.F. Kenyor, expresses support for the restriction, emphasizing the importance of public safety for societal development.
Despite some protests from aggrieved motorcyclists, the LNP remains steadfast in implementing the restriction, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the public.
