Unexpected Postponement Sparks Outcry from County Sports Committees in Liberia

In a surprising turn of events, the Association of County Steering Committee Chairpersons has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the abrupt postponement of the 2023/2024 National County Sports Meet (NCSM) by the Liberian Government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

At a joint press conference, spokesperson Abdul Kanneh conveyed the organization's dismay, deeming the postponement untimely and embarrassing. Kanneh emphasized the unacceptability of the decision, particularly considering the extensive preparations undertaken by the participating teams.

Kanneh revealed that the Counties Steering Committees had incurred substantial expenses, amounting to thousands of United States Dollars. These expenses encompassed player signings, early preparations, hotel rentals, procurement of player materials, and remuneration for key players. The committees urged the government to reimburse them for these outlays, as a significant portion of the funds utilized were externally sourced, with assurances of repayment plus interest to creditors.

While awaiting the announcement of the rescheduled date next year, the committees implored the Liberian government, specifically the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to address the financial implications of the postponement promptly.

In a stern call to action, Kanneh asserted, "We are also calling on the transitional team to take due cognizance and intervene. The Counties will be left with no alternative but to stage an endless mass-based protest to ensure that the Ministry settles the debts owed by various Counties due to the abrupt postponement of this year’s National Sports Meet."

Adding to the chorus of discontent, Abu G. Fofana, Chairperson of the Margibi County sports steering committee, lamented the serious embarrassment caused by the postponement. Fofana vowed, "We will not rest until we escape this embarrassment caused by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Our demands must be met."

As the specter of uncertainty looms over the National County Sports Meet, the Counties and their steering committees stand united in their resolve to seek redress and uphold the integrity of Liberian sports.
