“Liberia Is Bigger Than Any One Person, Party, or Position” Boakai

Paynesville, Liberia: Liberia, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai acknowledged the supreme court decision regarding the ongoing standoff within the House of Representatives and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.

On April 23, 2025, the Supreme Court delivered its ruling on a Bill of Information concerning the impasse that has gripped the lower house of the Legislature. While President Boakai recognized the authority of the nation’s highest court, he emphasized that the core issues remain unresolved.

“The House of Representatives’ problem remains unresolved,” the President said. “Accordingly, my government has already initiated broad consultations with relevant national stakeholders to determine the most appropriate and constitutionally sound path forward.”

These consultations, he noted, include traditional leaders and other key figures from across the national landscape, as the administration seeks a peaceful and lawful resolution.

The President reaffirmed his dedication to the principle of separation of powers, stating, “We remain fully committed to preserving the sanctity of our democracy and the principle of three separate but coordinate branches of government.”

Amid growing public concern over the prolonged deadlock, the President pointed to recent incidents that have shocked the nation, including the arson attack on the Capitol Building and reported acts of vandalism targeting public institutions.

“We have watched with growing concern as the division in the House of Representatives remained unresolved, undermining public confidence in one of our most vital democratic institutions,” he said. “Tragically, we have also witnessed the torching of the Capitol Building by arsonists intent on sowing chaos and discord.”

Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the attacks, and the President vowed swift justice for those responsible.

“Let me be clear: under my leadership, the government of Liberia will not be held hostage by narrow interests or acts of lawlessness,” he asserted. “Those who undermine peace, violate the law, or seek to disrupt national harmony will face the full force of the law and justice.”

Reassuring citizens, President  Boakai emphasized that the government remains fully functional and committed to its responsibilities.

“I urge all Liberians to go about your daily lives peacefully and confidently,” he said. “Your government remains functional and steadfast in its responsibility to deliver services, maintain order, and uphold the values of democracy and good governance.”

In closing, the President called on all elected leaders and citizens to prioritize national unity and to act with a shared sense of purpose during this critical time.

“As we seek a political resolution to the impasse, let us do so with calm heads and committed hearts, ever mindful that Liberia is bigger than any one person, party, or position,” he stated. “We will protect our democracy. We will preserve our peace. And together, we will move Liberia forward.”
