House of Representatives Enact Laws to Establish Probate and Labour Courts in Nimba County

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: In a significant stride toward judicial decentralization, the House of Representatives of the 55th Legislature has passed two landmark bills establishing both a Probate Court and a Labour Court in Nimba County. The vote took place during the 17th Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter of the 2nd Session.

The legislation which was introduced by then Representative Samuel Kogar formerly of Nimba County Electoral District #5 now Senator marks a bold step to extend legal access and reduce dependency on overburdened courts in Monrovia.

The twin Acts received strong backing following a detailed report by the Joint Committees on Judiciary, Internal Affairs, Ways, Means & Finance, and Good Governance.

This is a major step forward in ensuring equitable access to justice across Liberia, said the Presiding Officer as the Acts were forwarded to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.

Key Objectives of the Acts include, decentralize Legal Services: Make justice more accessible for rural residents of Nimba County; reduce Caseload in Monrovia; pressure on central courts; strengthen Rule of Law; support Liberia’s ongoing judicial reform efforts and improve Access to Justice: Especially in probate (wills and estates) and labor-related matters.

If concurred by the Senate, these courts will be instrumental in addressing long-standing gaps in legal infrastructure in the county.

The Acts underscore the House’s commitment to good governance and judicial equity, placing Nimba at the forefront of Liberia’s broader legal reform agenda.
