BREAKING NEWS: Pope Francis Dies at 88

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a transformative figure in modern Catholicism, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed Monday morning.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo of the Vatican, made the somber announcement in a video statement:

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”

The Argentine-born pope, who had recently battled a severe case of double pneumonia, passed away peacefully in the Apostolic Palace. His death marks the end of a complex and often turbulent papacy defined by bold reforms, internal tensions, and a relentless focus on the poor and marginalized.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love,” Farrell said. “With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God.”

Elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Francis will be remembered as a leader who challenged centuries-old traditions in a bid to modernize the Church and bring it closer to the faithful across the globe.

Funeral arrangements and the selection process for his successor are expected to be announced in the coming days.
