Former President George Weah Acknowledges Foreign Affairs Letter, Raises Concerns Over Domestic Issues

Monrovia, Liberia – Former President George Manneh Weah has confirmed receipt of a letter from Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sarah Beysolow-Nyanti, acknowledging his contributions to Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

In a statement, the former Liberian leader reiterated his unwavering support for any effort aimed at advancing the interests of the Liberian people and enhancing the nation’s standing in the global arena.

He emphasized that Liberia’s aspiration for a UNSC seat is a testament to the country’s longstanding commitment to peace, both domestically and internationally.

“Our country has consistently played a vital role in peacekeeping efforts and has stood as an emblem of resilience in the face of adversity. Additionally, Liberia has played historical roles, as Africa's first independent republic, in the fight for the independence of many sister African nations,” the statement added.

He further highlighted Liberia’s foundational role as a member of the United Nations and its predecessor, the League of Nations, emphasizing the country’s contribution to global peace and order.

However, Weah expressed concerns over recent domestic developments that could potentially derail Liberia’s UNSC bid.

He referenced the August 22, 2024, raid on the headquarters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) by the Liberia National Police, during which live ammunition that was fired, injuring several partisans.

He described the incident as an unprovoked attack and a worrying sign of the administration’s disregard for political freedoms, the rule of law, and national unity

Weah also took note of a recent statement made by the government’s spokesperson, Minister Daniel Sando, at a press briefing, describing it as a “juvenile, sophomoric rant” aimed at undermining his credibility.

He pointed to what he described as a “schism” within the government, where one ministry writes a letter recognizing his efforts while another engages in disrespectful rhetoric, calling this a threat to Liberia’s UNSC bid.

While reaffirming his support for Liberia’s aspiration for a seat on the Security Council, Weah stressed the importance of the government’s internal actions aligning with the values it seeks to promote on the global stage.
