House Works on New Privacy Law to Protect People’s Data

Monrovia, Liberia: The House of Representatives is working on a new law to better protect people’s personal information in Liberia.

Committee Asked to Review Privacy Bill

During its meeting on Monday, the House asked the Committee on Post and Telecommunications to look at a new bill and give a report in two weeks.

What the Bill Is About

The bill is called “An Act For The Collection, Processing, Transmission, Storage, Protection, and Use of Personal Information In Liberia.” It was sent by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai. It explains how people and companies should collect, use, and protect personal data.

President Boakai’s Message

President Boakai said the law will apply to anyone using personal data whether in Liberia, the ECOWAS region, or beyond. It will cover how data is collected, shared, and stored.

Why This Law Matters

If passed, this law will make sure personal data is handled properly. It will also help Liberia follow international rules about data protection.

What’s Next

The House wants the Committee to carefully study the bill and come back with advice. Their report will help lawmakers decide whether to approve the new law.
