Liberia and Burkina Faso Strengthen Ties with Focus on Regional Peace and Security

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, met today with His Excellency Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Head of State of Burkina Faso, for high-level talks aimed at reinforcing regional peace and security. The meeting was held on behalf of His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who is seeking to bolster Liberia’s international standing.
At the core of the discussions was Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term. Minister Beysolow Nyanti appealed for Burkina Faso’s support, emphasizing that Liberia’s candidacy represents a historic opportunity to amplify the country’s voice in global peacekeeping efforts and contribute meaningfully to the resolution of international security challenges.
The meeting also addressed the pressing need for greater cooperation in the Sahel-Saharan region. Minister Beysolow Nyanti proposed the convening of a meeting of the Alliance of Sahel-Saharan States (AES) to further explore strategies for maintaining stability across the region. Captain Traoré warmly received this proposal, underscoring the mutual commitment to regional peace.
In a move to bolster economic relations, the Presidential Special Envoys on Investment and Tourism organized a private-sector roundtable with Burkinabe investors. The session highlighted Liberia as a promising destination for investment and business opportunities, with several investors expressing interest in exploring potential partnerships in Liberia’s growing sectors.
This diplomatic engagement reflects Liberia’s growing role in regional and global affairs, with both nations committed to strengthening their collaborative efforts in securing a more stable and prosperous future for West Africa.
The talks reflect Liberia’s dual focus on securing regional stability and elevating its global diplomatic profile. If successful, the UNSC bid would mark Liberia’s first tenure on the Council since 1961, aligning with President Boakai’s pledge to prioritize international engagement.
