Liberia Takes Major Step to Address Gas Shortages with New Refinery Projects

Liberia has faced significant challenges related to fuel shortages. 

These shortages often stem from various factors including supply chain disruptions, logistical issues and political or economic instability. In Liberia, fuel is crucial for transportation, electricity generation, and other essential services.

When shortages occur, they can lead to increased prices, long queues at gas stations, and disruptions in daily life.

On August 9, 2024, President Joseph Boakai broken ground at the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company for the construction of 12,800 metric tons of gasoline tank and a modern petroleum testing laboratory for Liberia. 

Speaking at the ceremony, the Liberian Leader described the initiative as a milestone for the petroleum industry of Liberia.

President said he was very hesitant to put the two RR in the ARREST Agenda because he did not want people believing that he coming to power to arrest them, but rather to make sure he arrest the wrongdoings and place the right people in places that bring credit to the Country this stating that his consciences is clear.

Our consciences are clear." President Boakai said.

President Boakai also used the gathering to reaffirm his government’s commitment to infrastructure development, service to the people, transparency, and accountability.

Meanwhile the Managing Director of LPRC Mr. Amos Tweh stated that when completed the new tank will increase storage capacities, product importation, and address any acute storage of petroleum products on the Liberian market.

Commenting on the modern petroleum laboratory for Liberia, Tweh said the standard Lab will be used to test and set standards for petroleum products in Liberia.
