Liberia Takes Steps Toward Justice: President Boakai Seeks UN Support for War Crimes and Drug Crisis
New York - President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is asking the UN General Assembly for support to Liberia's transitional justice intended to bring to hold those responsible for war crimes during Liberia's bitter past.
President Boakai informed the General Assembly that Liberia has taken a giant step to establish the office of war and economic crimes in Liberia.
He noted that his government's action is in line with the International Covenant on civil and political Rights, the joint action on impunity, and past human rights violations.
"As we embark on this process and acknowledge the enormity of this task, my government seeks the support of the United Nations, partners, and stakeholders in the pursuit of justice for victims, peace, and
reconciliation." President Boakai told the UN General Assembly.
The Liberian President addressing UNGA. also asked for international support to the fight against Drugs. He blamed the proliferation of Drugs on international criminal enterprises and their networks.
According to him, his government has taken stringent measures to fight drugs in the country.
"In response, we have not only declared the drug epidemic a health emergency and a national security threat, but we have also taken steps to address this issue by establishing a dedicated national body to tackle drug abuse in Liberia. I urge the international community to join Liberia in addressing the escalating drug crisis." President said.
According to President Boakai drug is affecting Liberian youths and jeopardizing the future of the country. He told UNGA that his government has declared drug a national State of emergency and national security threat.
