Liberian Woman Charged After Abandoning Baby in Swamp; Faces Jail Time

Lofa County, Liberia: The Liberian National Police have charged (officially accused) 21-year-old Saybah Kollie with multiple offenses (more than one crime), including attempted murder (trying to kill someone) and endangering the life and well-being of a child (putting a child’s life and health in danger).
According to the authorities (police and officials), Kollie allegedly (is said to have) gave birth to a baby girl, wrapped (covered) the newborn (new baby) in a plastic bag, and abandoned (left) her in a swamp (wet, muddy area).
The incident (event) happened on Monday, June 8, 2025, in Mawolo’s Town, Voinjama District. The baby was later discovered alive (found still living) by children who were fishing (catching fish) in the area.
After the event, Kollie reportedly confessed (admitted) to members of the community (people in the town) and was taken to Vezala Clinic for initial medical treatment (first aid).
She was later moved to Telewoyan Memorial Hospital for more care. This was helped by the county gender supervisor, Madam Deddeh K. Karmoh.
After treatment, Kollie was discharged (allowed to leave) and turned over to the police (given to the police) for questioning (being asked about the crime), during which she confessed (said she did it).
She has now been formally charged (officially accused), and her case was sent to the Voinjama Magisterial Court.
However, Associate Magistrate Ben B. Blama said the case is outside his court’s jurisdiction (his court cannot handle it)
According to the police charge sheet (official report), Kollie’s actions violate Sections 10.1 and 16.4 of the New Penal Law of the Republic of Liberia (go against the law).
“If she does not post bail (pay money to be released), she will stay in custody (jail) at the Voinjama Central Prison until the trial”. If she is convicted (found guilty), she could go to prison for up to five years, because the offense is a second-degree felony (serious but not the most serious crime).
