President Boakai Consoles Tolbert Family Ahead of Reburial, Signs Book of Condolence

Central Monrovia, Liberia: As part of ongoing activities for the reburial of former Liberian Presidents, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has signed the Book of Condolence for the late President William R. Tolbert, Jr.
The signing took place today, Monday, June 30, 2025, at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion in Monrovia. The ceremony marks an important step in the national healing and reconciliation process.
A day earlier, on June 29, President Boakai visited the Paynesville residence of Mrs. Williemae Tolbert-King, daughter of the late President Tolbert. The visit brought together surviving children, relatives, nephews, nieces, and cousins of the former Liberian leader.
During the visit, President Boakai reflected on the life and leadership of President Tolbert, describing his death as a “colossal loss” to the nation. He emphasized the need for national admission, forgiveness, and a united commitment to peace and prosperity.
“We must let go of the ugly and bitter parts of our history and choose a new and better path for Liberia,” President Boakai urged.
Welcoming the President and his delegation, Mrs. Tolbert-King, who once served as Liberia’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, expressed the family’s deep gratitude for the President’s visit.
She praised President Boakai’s leadership in promoting reconciliation and healing across the country. “Your steps towards peace and unity are critical, and we remain hopeful for a stronger, more united Liberia,” she said.
Top government officials accompanying the President included Education Minister Dr. Jarso Marley Jallah, Acting Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Hadja Mamaka Bility, Director General of the Cabinet Mr. Nathaniel Kwabo, and the Chair of the National Committee for the Reburial of Slain Presidents Tolbert and Doe.
The Book of Condolence remains open to the public and government officials throughout the day at the Centennial Pavilion.
