Rivercess County Is Left in Doom”: County Elders Petition HOR Over Urgent Development Needs

Capitol Hill, Monrovia: Rivercess County officials, led by traditional leaders and local government representatives, have issued a strong petition to the 55th National Legislature, highlighting the urgent need for development and reform in their county. The petition, presented to the House of Representatives, expresses frustration over the lack of infrastructure, governance, and economic progress in the region.

The petition, publicly read by Secretary General Mr. Benjamin S. Thomas, emphasizes the critical issues facing the county, including the deteriorating road network that hinders access to agricultural markets and healthcare facilities. Among the top priorities is the reconstruction of the road from Compound #3 to Tapitta, which the petitioners argue is essential for the county’s economy and access to services.

The elders also called for a shift in how local revenues are managed, demanding that logging companies pay land rental fees directly to the district treasury to support local development. They further request the establishment of three senior public high schools in the district, allowing children to obtain education without leaving the county.

In addition, the petition urges that local government positions be filled by Rivercess natives rather than outsiders, and calls for the construction of magisterial courts and police stations to address law enforcement challenges.

Signed by key leaders such as Chief Augustus Yarpah, Chief Johnson Moses, and Commissioner William Yeasay, the petition represents a united cry for the much-needed change and development in Rivercess County.

Upon receiving the petition, Representative Prince Toles, Chairman of the Committee on Claims and Petitions, commended the Rivercess leaders for formally presenting their grievances. He assured the community that the petition would be swiftly forwarded to plenary for further discussion and that feedback would be provided to the district in due course.
