Demolition of Illegal Structures Along Sewage and Water Lines Begins in Central Monrovia

Central Monrovia, Liberia: The Ministry of Public Works, in partnership with the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC), has initiated the demolition of structures located along key sewage and water lines in the city and surrounding areas.

The demolition efforts officially began on Thursday, February 13, 2025, starting with the iconic World Trade Center building on Gurley Street. Ministry of Public Works and LWSC teams were seen dismantling structures previously identified and marked for removal by the Ministry’s engineering division.
Assistant Minister for Planning, Abraham Bility, explained that before the demolitions, the Ministry’s Division of Zoning and Planning issued formal notices to property owners whose structures encroach on sewage and water lines. These notices instructed occupants to vacate their properties, ensuring the process could proceed without disruption.
Minister Bility underscored that the demolitions are necessary for facilitating better access and maintenance of the city’s sewage infrastructure by the LWSC. He further emphasized that any properties marked for demolition—whether by the past or current administration—would be removed without exception.
“The Ministry of Public Works remains dedicated to supporting government initiatives through the execution of its statutory mandate, including the demolition of illegal structures,” Minister Bility stated.
In addition to the official notifications from the Ministry of Public Works, the LWSC issued a seven-day notice to affected property owners, which expired on February 12, 2025.
The demolitions have sparked mixed reactions among the public, with some applauding the move as essential for improving public health and infrastructure, while others express concern over its impact on affected residents. The process is expected to continue throughout February, focusing on central Monrovia and surrounding neighborhoods.
