House of Representatives Sends Fiscal Year 2026 Draft National Budget to the Ways, Means and Finance Committee for Legislative Review
CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA: The House of Representatives of Liberia's 55th Bicameral Legislature unanimously voted to refer the Draft National Budget for Fiscal Year 2026 to the Committee on Ways, Means, and Finance for a comprehensive examination.
The decision made during the plenary session on November 11, 2025, marks the official commencement of the House's constitutionally required budget review process. This is a crucial step to ensure transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in managing public resources.
The Committee on Ways, Means, and Finance, chaired by P. Mike Jury, the Representative for Maryland County Electoral District #1, will lead the review process.
Representative Jury will be assisted by Dorwohn T. Gleekia, Co-Chair for Revenue, representing Nimba County Electoral District #6, and Attorney Michael Thomas, Co-Chair for Expenditure, representing Montserrado County Electoral District #4.
In the coming days, the Committee, in collaboration with the Legislative Budget Office (LBO), is expected to release a schedule for a comprehensive budget hearing that will cover both the revenue and expenditure components of the budget.
These hearings will require government ministries, agencies, and public corporations to appear before the Committee to justify their proposed allocations and outline priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.
The sessions are expected to facilitate thorough questioning regarding fiscal assumptions, policy targets, and their alignment with the government's ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
This stage of the budget process is essential for ensuring that public spending aligns with national priorities and achieves tangible results for our citizens.
The Fiscal Year 2026 budget referral initiates an intensive legislative engagement process, ultimately leading to the passage of the Appropriation Act.
The review will concentrate on balancing revenue generation with expenditure efficiency, while ensuring adequate resources for essential sectors such as education, health, infrastructure, and agriculture.
Through this process, the Legislature seeks to enhance fiscal governance, promote accountability, and ensure that the national budget serves as a genuine tool for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
