Liberia Airport Authority and Samaritan’s Purse Break Ground for the Restoration of Sanniquellie Airstrip

Sanniquellie, Nimba County: The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), in collaboration with Samaritan's Purse International Relief, has officially launched the rehabilitation of the Sanniquellie Airstrip in Nimba County.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Wednesday, June 11, in Sanniquellie, marks a pivotal step toward enhancing regional air connectivity, supporting humanitarian services, and accelerating economic growth in the region.
In attendance were local government officials, community stakeholders, representatives of Samaritan’s Purse, and executives from the LAA.
The project, valued at approximately One Hundred and Twenty-five Thousand United States Dollars (US$125,000), is expected to be completed within six months and is being executed by Jungle Water Group of Investment, a reputable local construction firm.
Speaking at the ceremony, Liberia Airport Authority Deputy Managing Director for Operations Hon. Mark Kuiah underscores the importance of the airstrip for both humanitarian outreach and regional development.
“This initiative aligns with our national aviation development agenda. We extend our gratitude to Samaritan’s Purse for their continued support and active involvement in Liberia’s aviation sector.”
Hon. Kuiah stated. “We also urge the local authorities to increase public awareness of safety protocols, especially as aviation is still relatively new to this environment. It is our duty at LAA to ensure the airstrip meets international aviation standards.”
At the ceremony, a representative from Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, a globally recognized Christian humanitarian organization, expressed the organization’s commitment to the initiative, citing the airstrip’s strategic role in delivering rapid relief and support.
“Aviation brings speed. When help is needed quickly, we can now respond effectively through this airstrip. This is not just infrastructure; it’s a channel for both service and ministry,” the representative affirmed.
Speaking on behalf of the local government, Nimba County Superintendent Hon. Kou Meapeh Gono lauded the efforts of LAA and Samaritan’s Purse, recalling the challenges that necessitated the project and emphasizing the transformative impact it will have on the region.
Community members have also welcomed the development with optimism, anticipating improved access to goods and services, economic stimulation, and increased tourism potential in Nimba County.
The Liberia Airport Authority reaffirms its commitment to building a robust and inclusive aviation network that connects all parts of Liberia and meets international safety and operational standards.
