Boakai Relieves Ambassador Kouyateh Amid Legislative Concerns
MONROVIA, Liberia: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has relieved Ambassador Sheikh Al-Moustapha Kouyateh of his duties as Ambassador-at-Large for Special Duties and Special Presidential Envoy, citing concerns arising from public statements attributed to the diplomat and subsequent objections from the House of Representatives.
According to a communication issued by the Executive Mansion on June 8, 2026, the decision follows recent comments reportedly made by Ambassador Kouyateh regarding the Honorable House of Representatives. The Presidency noted that lawmakers later communicated a Vote of No Confidence in his continued service, prompting presidential review and action.
President Boakai stated that effective governance and national development require constructive engagement, mutual respect, and strong collaboration among Liberia’s three branches of government. He emphasized that the successful implementation of the government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development depends on maintaining productive working relationships among key national institutions.
The decision has generated mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters of the President argue that the move demonstrates a commitment to preserving harmony between the Executive and Legislative branches and preventing unnecessary institutional conflicts.
Others, however, have questioned whether the dismissal was the most appropriate response, suggesting that dialogue or clarification from the ambassador could have been considered before such action was taken. Some political commentators view the development as a reflection of the growing sensitivity surrounding public remarks by government officials.
Despite differing opinions, analysts agree that the episode underscores the importance of accountability, professionalism, and respectful engagement among public officials, particularly at a time when the government is seeking broad national support for its development priorities.
President Boakai thanked Ambassador Kouyateh for his service to Liberia and wished him well in his future endeavors.
