Boakai Warns AI Could Widen Global Inequality, Calls for Investment in African Youth

NEW YORK, USA : President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has warned world leaders that the rapid development of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies could deepen global inequality if developing countries are left without the resources and expertise needed to participate.

Addressing the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly Thursday, President Boakai called for increased international investment in STEM education, digital literacy and technical training across Africa.

The Liberian leader said Africa's young population represents a major opportunity for the continent, noting that more than 60 percent of Africa's population is under the age of 25.

“Young people must become co-creators in the global digital economy, not just consumers,” President Boakai said.

He argued that African countries must develop the human capacity necessary to participate meaningfully in the global technology economy rather than remaining dependent on technologies developed elsewhere.

President Boakai also called for stronger ethical standards and regulation of artificial intelligence, particularly regarding its potential use in warfare.

He said international cooperation should go beyond regulating emerging technologies and should also help developing countries build their own technological capabilities.

According to the President, investment in young people, education and technology is directly connected to Africa's ability to compete in the global economy.

He warned that without adequate access to technology, expertise and training, the current technological revolution could deepen existing inequalities between developed and developing countries.

President Boakai therefore urged the international community to support African countries in developing the skills and technological capacity needed to ensure that young Africans participate as innovators and skilled workers in the emerging global digital economy.
