“No Nation Can Police Global Criminal Networks Alone” Boakai Seeks International Help Against Drug Trafficking

NEW YORK, USA — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has appealed for stronger international assistance to help Liberia confront transnational organized crime, cyber warfare and illicit drug trafficking across the Gulf of Guinea.

President Boakai made the appeal Thursday while addressing the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he outlined Liberia's growing security challenges as a current member of the UN Security Council.

The Liberian leader said Liberia's joint security forces are intensifying efforts against transnational drug networks but warned that the scale and nature of the threat go beyond the capacity of any single country.

“No nation can police global criminal networks alone,” President Boakai told world leaders.

He called for targeted international support to strengthen Liberia's coast-guard surveillance, intelligence-sharing capabilities and port-security technology.

According to the President, stronger international cooperation is necessary because criminal networks do not operate within the borders of one country.

He said Liberia is facing illicit narcotics trafficking along maritime corridors in the Gulf of Guinea, making international intelligence cooperation and stronger maritime security important to disrupting the movement of drugs and other illegal activities.

President Boakai's appeal comes as Liberia participates in international peace and security discussions as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term.

He said Liberia's security efforts require partnerships capable of providing the technology, intelligence and resources necessary to confront criminal networks operating across national boundaries.
