Breaking News: ECOWAS Trashed Majority Bloc’s Request To Replace Liberia’s Delegate to the Regional Parliament

Monrovia, Liberia: In what appears to be an unexpected turn of events, the parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional parliamentary body to which Liberia is a member, has trashed the request of the majority bloc of the 55th Legislature to recall and replace three of Liberia’s delegates.

In a Friday, March 7, 2025 communication addressed to Madam Mildred N. Sayon, Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives and Acting Secretary General of the Parliament, she stressed that the regional parliamentary body is unable to grant Liberia’s request to recall three of its members on legal grounds.

“I acknowledge receipt of your letter dated February 25, 2025, regarding the recall of three members designated by the House of Representatives of Liberia to serve in the ECOWAS Parliament. Following a thorough review of your request, I wish to inform you that in accordance with Article 18.1.2 of the Supplementary Act on the Enhancement of the Powers ECOWAS Parliament, the mandate of community parliamentarians is set for a fixed term of four years. Once designated and sworn in, members cannot be removed or replaced before the expiration of their term except in specific circumstances,” an ECOWAS Parliament communication under the signature of its acting SG K. Bertin SOME stated.

The communication stated further that the only conditions that support the removal of designated members to the ECOWAS are death, certified incapacitation, non-reelection, incompatibility with other national duties, misconduct and dismissal.
