Court Orders Detention of CDC Protesters amid Riot Charges

Monrovia: The Monrovia City Court, led by Magistrate Ben Barco, has ruled for the detention of multiple Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) protesters following a violent riot on August 22, 2023. The protesters are facing severe charges, including attempted murder, related to their actions during the unrest.
The court’s decision came after the CDC protesters allegedly blocked Tubman Boulevard with debris and clashed with police, resulting in injuries to sixteen officers and several civilians. The violent confrontation also caused approximately $10,000 in property damage.
Defense attorneys have argued for a preliminary examination, contending that the defendants were only present at the scene of the riot. They maintain that the charges are too severe given the circumstances. However, the prosecution counters that the charges, particularly the attempted murder of law enforcement officers, are serious and justify the protesters' continued detention.
Magistrate Barco has mandated that the defendants remain in custody unless they can provide the necessary bond. This decision underscores the court’s response to the gravity of the alleged offenses and aims to ensure that those charged will appear for future court proceedings.
