First Lady’s Media Officer Allegedly Caught in Stealing Scheme
Monrovia Liberia : The office of Liberia’s First Lady, Kartumu Boakai, is facing accusations of corruption. A senior official, Varfee Holmes, is accused of taking money from two people who wanted scholarships to study in London. Holmes, the Technical Consultant and Media Officer at the First Lady’s office, is said to have collected $2,000 from each applicant but never followed through with the scholarship promises.
The victims say they never heard from Holmes after paying the money. In an interview, Holmes admitted taking the money but claimed it was necessary to secure the scholarships. He initially denied the First Lady’s involvement but later said he had told her about the situation, though not in detail.
The scandal has upset many in Liberia, raising concerns about corruption in the government, especially in powerful offices like the First Lady’s. People are calling for a full investigation into Holmes’ actions and the First Lady’s office.
This case is also a blow to the Boakai administration’s efforts to promote education and fight corruption. Many are questioning whether this is just one incident or part of a bigger problem with corruption in the country’s leadership.
