Lawmakers Demand Investigation into Alleged Alterations of 2024 National Budget

Margibi County Senator Nathaniel F. McGill and Representative Musa Hassan Bility of Nimba County’s District #7 have raised serious concerns over alleged alterations to Liberia's 2024 national budget. During a joint press conference, the two lawmakers called for an independent investigation by either the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) or the General Auditing Commission (GAC).

They at the same time warned the executive branch, particularly the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, that they will not approve a recast of the budget unless these investigations are conducted.

Rep. Bility expressed alarm, stating that the budget currently in circulation is not the same as the one the House of Representatives initially forwarded to the Senate. Senator McGill echoed this concern, noting discrepancies between the budget sent to the executive and the version now being circulated. Both legislators are emphasizing the urgent need for transparency and accountability in the budgetary process.

In their joint statement, Senator McGill and Rep. Bility stressed that the integrity of the national budget is crucial, as it must accurately reflect the priorities and needs of the Liberian people.

They are demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged alterations and are calling for those responsible to be held accountable.

The legislators made it clear that they will block any approval of a recast budget until a full investigation is carried out and corrective actions are taken. Their stance underscores the growing concerns about financial transparency and governance in Liberia.

This controversy follows earlier allegations of budget alterations made by Representative Clarence Garh of Margibi County’s District #5 and Senator Amara Konneh of Gbarpolu County, who also serve as chairs on the House's committees on public accounts and audits.

As the situation develops, all eyes are on the relevant authorities to see how they will respond to these serious allegations, with the potential for significant political and financial implications for the country.
