Liberia Qualifier Hope for AFCON 2025 Slims Up
By: W. Roland James
The chances for Liberia qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 tournament are draining following 1 point in three (3) matches for the Lone Star.
Liberia kicked off her campaign in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers with a 1-1 draw to Togo but subsequently lost two straight matches to Algeria and Equatorial Guinea in rounds 3 and 4 of the qualifiers.
The Lone Star lost 3-0 to Algeria in round 2 of the qualifiers on home soil followed by another defeat on Friday, October 11, by 1-0 down against Equatorial Guinea in Malabo.
Equatorial Guinea capitalized on the narrow win against Liberia on Friday following a defensive blunder by Center-back Sampson Dweh leaving to the lone goal in the match that was converted from the penalty spot by Equatorial Guinea Forward Iban Salvador.
With a draw and back-to-back defeats in the lap of the qualifiers, Liberia now lies at the bottom of Group E with 1 point and 4 goals against which sets Coach Mario Marinica Lone Star's qualification at stake.
As it stands, Algeria leads Group E of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers with 9 points followed by Equatorial Guinea with 4 points in the second place (following the win against Liberia) while Togo holds the third place post with 2 points, a point difference to Liberia in fourth place. The two top teams (1st and 2nd places) in the group will qualify with others from various groups for the main tournament in Morocco, 2025.
Liberia with less chances will continue her fight in the zone on Monday, October 14, at home in the returned leg against Equatorial Guinea which will mark round 4 of the qualifiers.
A win for Coach Mario Marinica boys in the returned leg with Equatorial Guinea will restore their hope and build up their chances but a draw or loss will further reduce their qualifier chances.
Liberia is still on the strive to reach the final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament since she last participated in the tournament in 2002, about 22 years ago.
