Majority of Lawmakers Invoke House Rule and Constitution to Convene Legislative Session, Citing Loss of Confidence in Speaker Koffa

A group of majority members of the House of Representatives has invoked House Rules and the Liberian Constitution to convene a legislative session, citing a loss of trust and confidence in Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.

In a formal communication, the lawmakers informed the public of a resolution signed by a majority of representatives, which states that Speaker Koffa no longer holds the confidence of most House members. The majority invoked House Standing Rules #8 and #12, along with Article 33 of the Liberian Constitution, to justify their actions.

Article 33 of the Constitution states, “A simple majority of each house shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business,” a key provision that the lawmakers used to support their decision to convene the session.

The majority members have called for the session to take place in the Joint Chamber of the Legislature, urging all representatives to attend and participate in the session. They emphasized that this meeting is essential to uphold the constitutional process and ensure the continued service of the House of Representatives on behalf of the Liberian people.

The lawmakers stressed the importance of the session in maintaining the effective conduct of legislative business and urged their colleagues to adhere to the directive for the session’s success.

As of now, there has been no official response from Speaker Koffa or his supporters regarding this development.
