Senate Establishes Mediation Team to Resolve House of Representatives Impasse
Capitol Hill, Monrovia – The Liberian Senate has formed a mediation committee to address the ongoing discord within the House of Representatives, aiming to foster unity and ensure stability in the legislature for effective democratic governance.
The committee was created on Thursday, October 24, 2024, during a consultative session of the Senate. Members of the committee are tasked with mediating between the aggrieved House representatives and Speaker Fonati Koffa, with a focus on reaching a peaceful resolution.
Senator Gbehzohngar Findley of Grand Bassa County has been appointed as Chairman, and Senator Wellington Gevon Smith of Rivercess County will serve as Co-Chairman. The committee also includes Senators Thomas Yaya Nimely of Grand Gedeh County, J. Gbleh-bo Brown of Maryland County, and Dabah M. Varplilah of Grand Cape Mount County.
The Senate emphasized that resolving the current impasse is critical to maintaining a stable and functional legislative body, which is essential for Liberia’s democratic processes.
