Following a devastating mudslide that claimed the lives of 11 individuals in Chio Town, Rivercess County, Liberia's Vice President, Jeremiah Kpan Koung, delivered a poignant plea to the community's youth. Standing amidst the aftermath of the tragedy, Vice President Koung emphatically urged the young residents to abandon the perilous practice of illicit mining, cautioning against the false belief that the recent loss of life would yield greater gold deposits. Instead, he passionately advocated for the pursuit of sustainable agricultural endeavors as a means of securing livelihoods and safeguarding against further calamity.
Accompanied by a delegation of government officials, including National Security Advisor Cllr. Samuel Kofi Woods and Rivercess County Legislative Caucus chair Willington Geevon-Smith, Vice President Koung embarked on a sobering tour of the mining site. Witnessing firsthand the hazardous conditions that had claimed the lives of their fellow citizens, the Vice President conveyed heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, underscoring the government's commitment to offering support during their time of bereavement.
As a tangible demonstration of solidarity and assistance, the Liberian government provided financial aid, rice, and mattresses to the affected families. Recognizing the underlying socioeconomic challenges driving youth involvement in illicit mining, Senator Geevon-Smith emphasized the imperative of creating sustainable job opportunities within the county. Pointing to the absence of concession companies in the region, he underscored the need for concerted efforts to address unemployment and deter illicit activities among the youth.
Echoing sentiments of gratitude, Paramount Chief John Sowee expressed appreciation for the government's swift response and support in the aftermath of the tragedy. With the community reeling from the loss of loved ones, the collective call for sustainable livelihoods and enhanced economic opportunities resonated as a beacon of hope amidst adversity.
