'VP Koung Wants to Lead Liberia, Not Rule Nimba' Kwagrue Shuts Down Godfather Narrative

Monrovia, Liberia:Nimba County District #5 Representative Kortor Kwagrue has strongly defended Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung against claims that he is seeking to become the political "godfather" of Nimba County, insisting that the Vice President is focused on supporting President Joseph Boakai's administration and serving the nation rather than pursuing personal political dominance.

Speaking Monday on state radio, Representative Kwagrue dismissed the allegations as false and misleading, saying Vice President Koung has no intention of controlling the county's political landscape. According to him, the Vice President's priority is to work alongside President Joseph Boakai to ensure the country remains on a stable development path.

"Anybody who believes that the Vice President wants to become the godfather of Nimba is being misled. His focus is to work with President Boakai to lead Liberia and move the country forward."

Kwagrue further maintained that Koung has never expressed interest in assuming the role of a political kingmaker in Nimba, rejecting suggestions that the Vice President is positioning himself to dominate the county's political affairs.

"The Vice President has no interest in becoming the godfather of Nimba. He has no plan to control the county or claim such a position."

The lawmaker also revisited the growing debate surrounding Nimba County Senator Samuel Kogar, who recently came under public scrutiny after being honored by a group of elders amid discussions about political leadership in the county.

Kwagrue argued that the title of "godfather" is not one that can simply be bestowed upon an individual or claimed through public recognition, but rather one that must be earned through years of service, sacrifice, and meaningful contributions to the people.

"Godfatherism is not a title that is simply given to someone. It is something a person works for through commitment, leadership, and service."

He further suggested that Senator Kogar risks undermining his own political standing by embracing such a label prematurely, noting that the senator still has many opportunities to build genuine influence through tangible achievements for the people of Nimba.

"Senator Kogar has many opportunities to gain influence in Nimba, but seeking such a title without the necessary work is a misstep."

Kwagrue's latest remarks are expected to intensify the ongoing political debate in Nimba County over leadership, influence, and succession, as key political figures continue to position themselves ahead of future electoral contests while supporters remain divided over who should emerge as the county's most influential political figure.
