The House of Representatives Has Enacted a Landmark Legislation Aimed at Expanding and Enhancing Tertiary Education

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: In a major legislative milestone, the House of Representatives has approved five transformative education bills aimed at expanding access to higher learning and promoting educational inclusivity across Liberia.
According to a statement from the House Press Bureau, the bills are designed to address regional disparities in education and ensure greater academic opportunities for all Liberians.
Key provisions in the legislative package include the establishment of the Sign Language Institute of Liberia to support inclusive learning for the deaf and hard of hearing; the elevation of the Monrovia Vocational Training Center and Bong Technical College to full university status, and the creation of two new community colleges in River Gee and Rivercess Counties.
The legislation was meticulously vetted by the Joint Committee on Education and Public Administration and Judiciary, following a series of participatory public hearings involving education stakeholders, civil society actors, and local community leaders.
Chairman of the Joint Committee, Representative Nyahn Garsaye Flomo of Nimba County Electoral District #2 emphasized the significance of the bills, stating, “This legislative package represents a bold commitment to inclusive learning, regional development, and the equitable distribution of academic opportunities throughout Liberia”.
The bills have now been forwarded to the Liberian Senate for concurrence, marking the next step in what education pundits and stakeholders are calling a historic effort to reshape the educational landscape of the country.
