Boakai Seeks More U.S. Investment, Stronger Strategic Partnership

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is seeking to turn Liberia’s longstanding relationship with the United States into stronger economic, institutional and diplomatic cooperation, following high-level talks with U.S. Congressman Gregory W. Meeks in Washington.

President Boakai met Tuesday, September 15, with Congressman Meeks, the U.S. Representative for New York’s Fifth Congressional District and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The meeting focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, democratic governance, economic development, regional peace and security, and stronger institutional ties between Liberia and the United States.

President Boakai used the engagement to highlight opportunities for increased American private-sector participation in Liberia, while emphasizing the need for stronger trade and investment ties.

“Our administration remains fully committed to strengthening Liberia’s democratic institutions, supporting the rule of law, and expanding American private-sector investment to drive sustainable economic growth,” President Boakai said, according to reporting on the meeting.

The President also emphasized Liberia’s commitment to accountable public institutions and an environment capable of supporting sustainable economic growth.

The discussions come as Liberia assumes a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. The two sides discussed opportunities for closer cooperation on peacebuilding, international security and developments in West Africa.

Congressman Meeks welcomed President Boakai and the Liberian delegation, with discussions also covering opportunities for continued U.S. engagement in Liberia’s economic development.

“The friendship between Liberia and the United States is anchored in shared history and values,” Meeks said, according to reporting on the engagement.

The Capitol Hill meeting also reaffirmed the historical ties between Liberia and the United States, while placing greater emphasis on practical areas of cooperation that could benefit both countries.

President Boakai was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister and Dean of the Cabinet Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister Without Portfolio Hadja Mamaka Bility, National Security Advisor Samuel Kofi Woods, Cabinet Director Nathaniel T. Kwabo, Liberia’s Ambassador to the United States Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, and Executive Assistant to the President Morie Nemah.

The engagement forms part of President Boakai’s broader U.S. mission ahead of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, with his administration emphasizing stronger international partnerships around Liberia’s development and diplomatic priorities.
