Breaking the Silence: Media Professionals Champion Responsible Reporting on Safe Abortion

In an effort to promote responsible reporting and combat stigma surrounding safe abortion, media professionals are undergoing transformative sessions focused on values clarification and attitude adjustment.

Recognizing the pivotal role of the media in shaping societal perspectives, the Working Group on Advocacy for Safe Abortion in Liberia has proposed tailored Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation sessions for media institutions.

Naomi Tullay Solanke, Executive Director of the Community Healthcare Initiative, emphasized that the initiative's aim to foster empathy and sensitivity in media coverage of safe abortion while disseminating accurate, rights-based information to the public.

Through collaborative endeavors between media entities and advocacy groups, the path towards promoting access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services, particularly safe abortion, is brighter than ever before.

The objective of these sessions is to instill ethical and value-based practices within media institutions and cultivate a positive societal attitude towards safe abortion.

"By engaging media professionals in reflective workshops, the initiative seeks to explore personal values and potential biases, enabling them to engage in responsible reporting".

These sessions facilitate open dialogues to address dilemmas, misconceptions, and stigmas surrounding safe abortion. Media professionals are equipped with comprehensive information on safe abortion guidelines and empowered to dispel common myths through evidence-based presentations.

Furthermore, integrating human rights and empathy training underscores the importance of respecting individuals' rights to make choices about their bodies. Through empathy-building exercises, media professionals gain deeper insights and reduce judgment in their coverage.

Interactive case studies illuminate the complexities and ethical considerations in reporting on safe abortion, fostering critical thinking and open discussions on ethical reporting practices.

Expert-led sessions, featuring insights from healthcare professionals, legal experts, and reproductive health advocates, create a platform for dialogue and exchange between media professionals and field experts.

The expected outcomes are ambitious yet attainable, aiming to increase awareness and understanding of personal values and biases among media professionals.

Through the adoption of ethical guidelines and practices in reporting, the initiative seeks to contribute to fair and unbiased coverage, ultimately reducing stigma and misconceptions related to safe abortion through responsible reporting.
