Ghanaian MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Raises Concerns Over $20 Million Shipment from Liberia
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of Ghana’s Parliament, has raised alarms regarding a shipment of $20 million allegedly sent by the Central Bank of Liberia to Ghana. The funds arrived at Kotoka International Airport on August 27, 2024, aboard Emirates Airline Flight No. EK787, according to a letter dated August 21, 2024, from Mr. Evans Okeyre-Addo of the Currency Management Department at the Bank of Ghana.
The letter sought clearance from the Ghana Revenue Authority to process the uncirculated banknotes, which were to be stored in the Bank of Ghana’s vault until an available flight could transport them to Liberia. The shipment was covered by Airway Bill No. 176-7073-7225 and had been transported from Heathrow Airport in London.
Ablakwa has voiced concerns over discrepancies between the supporting documents and the details in the clearance request. While the Bank of Ghana claims the money is intended for the Central Bank of Liberia, other documents suggest that the consignee is the Bank of Ghana itself.
In his posts on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), Ablakwa emphasized the need for clarity on whether the funds will indeed be transferred to Liberia, and if so, when and in what full amount. He has pledged to continue monitoring the situation to ensure the proper handling and transfer of the funds.
