Legislative Staffers Mount Pressure on Senate Leadership for Extra Sitting Benefits

Protests continue at the Liberian Senate over extra sitting fees
Staffers of the House of Senate have continued their protest actions today, Friday, January 5, 2024, at the grounds of the Liberian Senate in demand of extra sitting fees owned by the leader of that august body following the extension of the senate sitting.

On Thursday, the staffers disrupted normal legislative activities of the Senate, claiming that the august body has refused to pay them for the two extra sittings.

The Thursday protest Action halted the confirmation hearings of the Associate Justice designate, counselor Frank Musa Dean, and the Commissioner-General designate of the Liberia Revenue Authority, Dr. Samora Wolokolie.

Speaking on the protest scene, the President of the Legislative Staffers Association disclosed that they were misinformed by Senate Pro-temp Albert Chie that the body recalled itself and not President George Weah.

Charles Brown added that the Pro-temp informed them (staffers) that there is no extra benefit attached to the sittings.
But Mr. Brown maintained that the Grand Kru County Senator has been providing false information, stressing that there is always a benefit given by the President for extra sitting and by that they must be paid for their extra work.
The senate staffers vowed to continue the protest action until the climax of the 54th Legislature next Tuesday.

In reaction to the protesters' claims, Senate Pro-Tempore Albert Chie denied the allegations, clarifying that at no time did the members of the Senate ever receive any money from the Ministry of Finance and siphoned it.
