Liberia Launches Groundbreaking Initiative to Rescue Over 7,000 Street Children

Today, August 28, 2024, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is unveiling the "Support A Child, Save The Future" project at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Monrovia. This landmark five-year initiative, spearheaded by the Government of Liberia and the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, targets the permanent relocation of over 7,000 children from street vending across the nation.

This urgent response comes in light of a 2022 survey that uncovered 366,584 children living in street conditions, with Montserrado County alone representing 42% of this figure. The project will kick off in Monrovia and expand to other regions, providing these children with safe housing and essential support.

In addition to relocating the children, the initiative will also focus on empowering 1,920 mothers and caregivers, offering a holistic approach to tackling the issue. The "Support A Child, Save The Future" project marks a significant commitment to safeguarding and improving the futures of Liberia's most vulnerable children.
