Liberia U-20 Kick-off WAFU Zone A AFCON Qualifiers With a Win

Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia U-20 National Football Team began their WAFU Zone ‘A’ AFCON qualifiers campaign on a positive note with a 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau on Sunday, September 18, 2024, at an empty SKD sports complex in Paynesville, located outside of Monrovia.

The Junior Lone Star earned their first three points of the tournament with a convincing victory. The goal came from Nuch Zohn of first division side Watanga FC, who found the back of the net in a fascinating fashion in the 28th minute following a Barrent Karr cross in the penalty spot.

Both teams started the match impressively, with several missed attempts at finding the opener. Guinea Bissau had the chance to take the lead but failed to capitalize on their opportunities in the early stages of the match.

Only a single goal separated the two teams before halftime.

In the second half, the Liberian team continued to apply pressure on Guinea Bissau to maintain their lead until the final whistle.

To secure qualification for the next round of the competition, Liberia will need to win their second game. They will face Sierra Leone on Wednesday, September 18, after Sierra Leone shared points with Guinea in a goalless match, which was game two of the day at the SKD. Liberia will conclude the group stage with a match against Guinea.

The 2024 U-20 West African Football Union (WAFU- Zone A) tournament will last for two weeks. Group A consists of the host Liberia, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, while Group B includes Mali, Gambia, Senegal, and Mauritania.

Matches will be held at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium and the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.

In 2018, the Junior Scorpions of Gambia defeated Liberia 2-1 at the SKD to win the championship.
