President Boakai Celebrates 60 Years of Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, and Nimba Counties"

Voinjama Lofa County: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai marked the 60th anniversary of the creation of Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, and Nimba counties. The event, which brought together citizens from all four regions, celebrated six decades of resilience, unity, and progress since their establishment in 1964. This milestone underscores the enduring spirit of the people in these counties and their commitment to shaping Liberia’s future.

The anniversary reflects the vision of President William V.S. Tubman, whose decentralization policy sought to bring governance closer to the people. His efforts, central to his Unification policy, aimed to bridge regional divides and foster national cohesion. By creating these counties, Tubman laid the groundwork for greater political participation and regional development.

During the event, President Boakai praised the leaders who paved the way for progress in these regions, including Hon. Moses P. Harris of Grand Gedeh, Hon. James Y. Gbarbea Sr. of Bong, Hon. Robert H. Kennedy of Lofa, and Hon. Gabriel G. Farngalo of Nimba. Their leadership helped transition these counties from obscurity to key drivers of Liberia's economic and social development.

Economic Contributions and Resources

The four counties have significantly contributed to Liberia's economic growth, particularly in agriculture and mining. Known as the nation’s breadbasket, Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, and Nimba are vital to the country’s agricultural sector, producing rice, cocoa, coffee, and other essential crops. Bong and Nimba's rich iron ore deposits have played a key role in powering Liberia’s mining industry, while Grand Gedeh’s timber and Lofa’s agricultural productivity offer untapped potential for further economic growth.

These counties also exemplify Liberia’s cultural diversity. From the vibrant Kpelleh dances of Bong to the rich traditions of the Krahn people in Grand Gedeh, these regions showcase the nation’s cultural mosaic. Nimba’s entrepreneurial spirit and Lofa’s focus on education continue to inspire progress, with leaders from these counties playing central roles in shaping Liberia’s political landscape.

Beyond their economic and political contributions, these counties hold immense cultural value. Bong County, for example, is home to the Kpatawee Waterfall, a symbol of Liberia’s natural beauty. Nimba’s Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlights the country’s rich biodiversity and global environmental importance. Cultural festivals, traditional arts, and communal farming practices in these counties continue to foster unity and pride, serving as a reminder of the collective strength of Liberia’s people.

As President Boakai reflected on the achievements of the past six decades, he emphasized the importance of forging a path toward inclusive development. He urged the people of Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, and Nimba to build on their successes by embracing agricultural innovation, technological advancement, and youth empowerment. The president also called for increased collaboration between counties to promote sustainable growth and unity across the nation.

The 60th anniversary celebration was not only a look back at the past but also a vision for the future. It was a reminder that true reconciliation, peace, and national unity can only be achieved through collective effort. President Boakai’s message resonated with citizens, inspiring them to continue working together to transform Liberia’s abundant natural resources into sustainable wealth for all.

As the anniversary concluded, the president urged all Liberians to embrace their shared history and work toward a prosperous future. With continued cooperation, unity, and dedication, the people of Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, Nimba, and all of Liberia can continue to build a strong and prosperous nation.
