Proposed Overhead Bridge Construction in Limbo?

Monrovia, Liberia: Public concern is raging among citizens owing to the seemingly delayed construction of the much-publicized overpass, as was announced by Public Works Minister Roland Lafayette Giddings.

The Public Works boss had announced that construction of the overpasses along Tubman Boulevard would commence in February 2025, with groundbreaking and work set to commence immediately.

Making the pronouncement in December 2024, Minister Giddings revealed that China Rail and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company, had been contracted to build two overpasses in Monrovia to ease traffic congestion and enhance the city's infrastructure.

However, more than a month has passed since the promised date of commencement of construction works, and Liberians are eager for an answer as to why there is not any sign of construction works along the route.

February has come and gone, and as March is fast approaching its end, there has been no groundbreaking or visible progress on the project.

The silence surrounding the initiative has left many Liberians questioning whether the plan has hit an unexpected roadblock.

This isn't the first delay related to the project. In August 2024, Minister Giddings had also announced that demolitions for properties near the proposed overpass sites would begin on November 1, 2024.

These demolitions were meant to clear compensated structures and remove any unauthorized buildings erected after the cutoff date of August 11, 2021. Yet, months later, no significant action has been taken.

With no updates from the government, the big question remains: Has the overpass construction stalled again?
