Senate Pro-Tempore Lawrence Highlights Key Achievements, Outlines Priorities for Second Session”

Capitol Hill Liberia : The Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Grand Bassa Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has cataloged major achievements by the Senate including the passage of twenty-seven (27) Legislations during its First Session.

The full package of the twenty-seven (27) Legislations includes eighteen (18) ratifications, three (3) amendments, six (6) enactments, and confirmation of nine hundred and ninety-six (996) nominees added up to several other legislative instruments that are still in committee’s room.

Senator Karnga-Lawrence attributed the success of the first session of the Liberian Senate to the cooperation and unity amongst Senators amidst political diversity, emphasizing their dedication to committee work.

She also mentioned that regular engagements and consultations as a team helped in ensuring a successful first year of her leadership at the House of Senate.

At the same juncture, the Senate Pro Tempore said, the Senate’s agenda during its Second Session will prioritize increasing its oversight responsibility in addressing issues of road infrastructure, the energy sector, and accountability.

Enhancing Senate staff capacity and the digitalization of the Senate is the list of the Senate’s focus during its second session.

In a related development, Pro-Tempore, Karnga-Lawrence, has warned Senate staffers against unlawful disruption of Senate activities and providing misleading information to the public about the House of Senate.

Senator Karnga-Lawrence warning comes following allegations from the Senate staff leadership accusing the Senate of denying them special sitting benefits; a claim the Senate strongly dismissed as false and misleading.

Providing more details on the matter, Pro Tempore Karnga-Lawrence clarified that the Senate held three special sittings in 2024 andthat staffers were paid for two sittings.

She disclosed that payment for the final sitting is currently being processed through the 2025 Fiscal Budget.

The Grand Bassa Senator further encouraged the leadership of the Senate staff to use proper channels and conduct thorough research before giving out information.

She also emphasized the openness and cooperation of the Rules, Order, and Administration (ROA) Chair in handling such matters.
