A Courtesy Call With Political Interest: Cummings Meets Jimmy Smith

Paynesville City, Liberia: Alternative National Congress political leader Alexander B. Cummings has visited former Montserrado County District #2 Representative Jimmy Smith at his home, bringing together two political figures now associated with different sides of Liberia’s political divide.

The encounter was described as a courtesy visit. The account provided did not disclose what the two men discussed or indicate that they reached any political agreement.

Smith is currently associated with the National Independent Movement for Boakai, known as NIMBO, which is working to support President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s reelection in 2029.

Led by Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah, the movement has announced plans to mobilize supporters across Liberia’s 15 counties. Its membership brings together people from different political backgrounds, including former opposition supporters. 

Cummings, meanwhile, has been taking part in efforts to bring opposition parties closer together ahead of the next elections.

The visit puts those different political commitments in the same room. But a meeting between the two men does not, by itself, establish that Smith is reconsidering his support for Boakai or that Cummings is seeking an agreement with NIMBO.

Without a public account of their conversation, the purpose of the visit remains limited to its description as a courtesy call.

It comes during a busy month for opposition politics. Following discussions in September, Cummings joined former President George Weah and three other political leaders in signing a joint communiqué pledging cooperation and greater scrutiny of the Boakai administration.

Those developments give Cummings’ engagements with other political figures added relevance. Opposition leaders are discussing how to work together, while supporters of the incumbent President are building their own networks.

For Smith, the visit brings renewed attention to his political relationships and his current involvement with the pro-Boakai movement.

For Cummings, it shows that contact with political figures outside the opposition’s emerging arrangement continues.
