Liberia, China Sign US$30 Million Grant to Support Development Projects
Monrovia, Liberia: Liberia and the People’s Republic of China have signed a development grant agreement valued at RMB 200 million, reported at approximately US$30 million, to support projects to be agreed upon by the two governments.
The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 27, following discussions held during Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti’s official visit to Beijing in May 2026.
Nyanti made the visit at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Their talks covered relations between the two countries and Chinese assistance for Liberia’s development programme under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Nyanti thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the Chinese people for the assistance. She said the agreement gave practical effect to commitments made during her Beijing visit.
“It is a very clear example of real action after bilateral dialogue,” she said.
The minister reaffirmed Liberia’s adherence to the One China policy and called for greater trade and investment between the two countries. She also expressed interest in Chinese investment that would provide employment for young Liberians.
Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu said the grant would finance projects jointly selected by Liberia and China. He described the agreement as further evidence of his country’s support for Liberia’s development.
Yin referred to more than eight Chinese-supported projects already under way in Liberia and said Beijing intended to continue cooperation with Monrovia, both through direct relations and within the United Nations and other international bodies.
The account of the ceremony did not specify which projects would receive funding under the new agreement or when disbursement would begin.
The discussions also touched on Liberia’s forthcoming presidency of the United Nations Security Council in December 2026.
Nyanti sought China’s continued support and invited Wang Yi to attend a high-level debate on maritime security scheduled for December 3 in New York. President Boakai is expected to chair that meeting.
The grant adds to existing Chinese assistance to Liberia. The selection of projects and arrangements for carrying them out will be determined by the two governments.
