Female Lone Star Crowned Back-to-Back MRU U-20 Champions

BO CITY, SIERRA LEONE: Liberia's female Lone Star Under-20 national team has emerged as champions of the 2025 Mano River Union Women's Under-20 Tournament, clinching the Cup for the second time in a row.

The female junior Lone Star retained their championship after narrowly trashing hosts Sierra Leone 2-1 on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at the Southern Arena Stadium in Bo City.

Both Liberia and Sierra Leone had drawn 3 consecutive games in the two-nation tournament, before going into the tie-breaker in the grand final, which saw the Red, White and Blue girls triumping.

Liberia took the lead just after 2 minutes of play following a defensive blunder from the Sierra Leoneons that saw youngster Olive Nyumah finishing a deflected ball inside the penalty area.

Coach Famata Dean's girls never pulled back after taking the lead, keeping their opponents under intense pressure, until the Real Muja rising Olive Nyumah set in another goal in the 31st minute to extend the lead and seal a brace for herself.

However, the Sierra Leoneons responded swiftly with a powerful strike to reduce the score gap to 2-1 just before the halftime whistle. After the break, Liberia sharply defended her narrow lead to secure the crucial win.

The 2025 trophy marked yet another milestone for the young Lone Star. The Red, White and Blue side triumphed in the maiden edition over Sierra Leone and Guinea in 2024 under the guidance of former manager Salem Kebede.

The team has received praises for its growing dominance on the regional scene. Pundits believe the back-to-back MRU championship win signaled an improvement for women's football in Liberia.
