Sen. Cyrus Puts L$2M Behind Lofa's District League

VOINJAMA, LOFA COUNTY — For young athletes preparing to represent their communities in Lofa County’s upcoming District League, the competition now comes with a much-needed boost.

Lofa County Senator Hon. Momo Tarnuekollie Cyrus has donated L$2 million, 11 sets of jerseys, 22 footballs and a trophy toward the competition, which is expected to bring together teams from all 11 administrative districts of the county.

The donation was presented on September 7 in Voinjama by Senator Cyrus’ Chief of Office Staff, Mr. Arthur Kowah, on behalf of the Senator.

Beyond helping to cover some of the financial and logistical demands of the tournament, the contribution is being viewed as support for grassroots sports and the young people who depend on such competitions to develop and showcase their talents.

Speaking on behalf of Senator Cyrus, Mr. Kowah encouraged the participating teams and young athletes to use the competition not only to compete, but also to build discipline, friendship and unity.

He said sports can play an important role in keeping young people engaged in productive activities while creating opportunities for talented athletes to gain recognition.

For a county where many young athletes have limited access to organized sporting opportunities and equipment, the donation puts resources directly into a competition designed to bring communities together.

Receiving the donation, Lofa County Superintendent Hon. J. Lavelah Massaquoi thanked Senator Cyrus for what he described as timely support for the county’s sporting activities.

Superintendent Massaquoi said all 11 administrative districts will participate independently in this year’s District League, turning the competition into a countywide contest for sporting pride.

But this year’s league will not be limited to football.

The Superintendent announced that kickball will also be introduced, giving more young people an opportunity to participate and compete at the county level.

The move is expected to expand the reach of the tournament, particularly among communities and athletes whose sporting interests go beyond football.

Superintendent Massaquoi has also appointed Mr. Jusu Fambulleh as Chairman of the District League Organizing Committee.

The committee is expected to coordinate preparations for the competition, including working with participating districts and other stakeholders to ensure the tournament is properly organized.

With the competition expected to begin next week, anticipation is building across the county as the 11 districts prepare to face off.

But the importance of the District League may stretch beyond who eventually lifts the trophy.

For many young people in Lofa, organized sports provide a chance to leave the sidelines, represent their communities and demonstrate what they can do.

The competition can also create space for young athletes to form new relationships across district lines, while giving promising footballers and kickball players an opportunity to attract attention beyond their communities.

Senator Cyrus’ contribution therefore arrives at a critical point in the preparations, providing both funding and basic sporting materials as organizers work toward the start of the tournament.

Now, with the equipment delivered and the districts preparing, the focus shifts to the playing field.

Eleven districts. Two sports. One county title — and a new chance for Lofa’s young talents to prove themselves.
