Liberian Senate Passes Act to Establish Ministry of Local Government

Capitol Hill Liberia: The Liberian Senate has repealed the act establishing the Ministry of Internal Affairs and has passed a new law creating the Ministry of Local Government.

This move aligns with the Local Government Act of 2018, which aims to devolve more power and authority to local governments while increasing citizen participation in governance.

Implementation and Continuity of Existing Agreements Despite repealing the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Senate ensured that any contracts, orders, or decisions made under the former ministry before the passage of this act will remain valid.

These agreements will continue to be legally binding and enforceable under the new Ministry of Local Government.

Mandate of the Ministry of Local Government

The newly established Ministry of Local Government will oversee and coordinate the activities of local governmentsacross Liberia. Its responsibilities include:Managing balanced socio-economic development programs

Empowering local communities
Strengthening the delivery of social services

Promoting good governance, including participation, transparency, and accountability

Enhancing access to justice at the local level

Additionally, the ministry will be tasked with peacebuilding efforts, promoting reconciliation, social cohesion, national unification, and integration to ensure sustainable peace, development, and political stability in the country.
