LTA and NIR Sign MOU to Boost National Identification and Strengthen Telecommunications Sector

In a bid to strengthen Liberia's telecommunications sector and enhance the nation's digital security, the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) and the National Identification Registry (NIR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate the free registration of National Identification Cards for citizens.

The initiative aims to streamline the identification process and enhance security for digital platforms. During the signing ceremony, LTA Acting Chairperson Abdullah Kamara and NIR Executive Director General Andrew Peters highlighted that this partnership is a significant step toward building a robust national database, which will serve as a single verification point for services such as banking, mobile communications, and e-government transactions.

Peters emphasized that the NIR has established registration centers in every district across the country, ensuring a continuous and secure process. He also noted that the newly issued identification cards will be integral in the upcoming national elections, reducing fraud and strengthening national security.

Currently, Liberia has over 4 million SIM cards in use. Under new LTA regulations, SIM card owners must register their cards with their mobile network operators using NIR-issued identification cards. Failure to comply within six months will result in SIM card deactivation, a measure designed to curb fraudulent activity and enhance overall security.

The MOU is seen as a pivotal move in integrating biometric identification systems into Liberia’s telecommunications infrastructure. LTA's Acting Chairperson reiterated the importance of this partnership, stating that a well-equipped national database is essential for safeguarding digital platforms and protecting subscribers from identity theft and cybercrimes.
