Nimba Edged Grand Kru to Continue Trophy Dominance in County Meet

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Nimba County whipped rivals Grand Kru County 2-0 on Sunday, January 18, 2026 to emerge as the football champions of the 2025/2026 National County Sports Meet.

The Mount Nimba boys outshined Grand Kru scoring in both halves of the grand final to cement their 7th title—the most won by any county in the history of the tournament.

Nimba County took the first half lead through striker Prince Lynch's powerful curve shot from inside the 18-yard box that beat goalkeeper Christopher Sayon at the far-left corner of the goal.

Grand Kru County quickly rearranged, launching a series of tribble attacks but failed to level the score line in the first. Nimba's defensive line stood resolute, resisting all counterattacks to keep their one goal advantage intact going for the break.

The Mount Nimba boys returned with renewed energy, mounting sustained pressure that paid a few minutes into the second half when team captain Josiah Cea was fouled inside the penalty area by a Grand Kru County defender.

Mohammed Keita gave a cool finish from the spot, converting the penalty to double Nimba’s lead to 2–0. The match intensity grew after the boys of Grand Kru conceded the second goal.

Grand Kru County loose up on the two flanks mounting pressure on Nimba, but spectators only saw wasted opportunities. Nimba drew back and strongly protected their lead, triumphing after the full 90 minutes at the Samuel Karyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.

Following the championship win, Nimba County Head Coach Mamadee Sheriff expressed excitement, stating that the team's success was based on high determination and focus.

"Coming against Grand Kru that has not lost the final, we were very positive that were going to win them today. We determined from the group stage to the grand final breaking deadlocks", Coach Sheriff asserted.

Coach Mamadee Sheriff’s side enjoyed an impressive and unbeaten campaign to lift the 2025/2026 National County Sports Meet football title. Nimba played eight matches in the tournament, won six and drew two.

Nimba County proved its supremacy with the latest championship success. The county first claimed the title in 1978 and went on to celebrate further victories in 1979, 2010, 2011, 2022, 2023, and now 2026.

The Mountaineers now maintained two-title advantage over closed rivals Grand Kru County who sits with 5.

The National County Sports Meet is the most celebrated sporting festival in Liberia that brings together the fifteen political subdivisions under the spirit of peace and unity to compete in football, kickball and other sports disciplines.
