Over 40 Burkinabe Nationals Attack Mines Officials in Gbarpolu

Gbarpolu, Liberia: More than 40 Burkinabe nationals reportedly attacked officials of Liberia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy during a late-night inspection of an illegal mining site in Henry Town, Gbarpolu County.

Authorities say the operation was led by Inspector General of Mines Agatitu B. Coker and Director General of Mines Alwell Carr as part of efforts to crack down on illegal mining activities in the area.

Officials said the group had allegedly been operating illegally for over six months without proper documents, trade records, or resident permits.

Several suspects, including site supervisor Abraham Tallaweh, were arrested, while all mining activities at the location were shut down pending investigation.

Meanwhile, authorities also seized a truck carrying mining equipment, locally known as “katakata,” reportedly heading to Belle Yealla in Belle District.
